Parts of southern Maine, northeastern Massachusetts, and southeastern New Hampshire have been affected by flooding. As of Tuesday, May 16, 2006, most rivers and tributaries had crested. However, as with most floods, it will take several days for the water to recede.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has been in contact with the Presbytery of Northern New England to offer support and assistance. Richard Wyatt, the Executive Presbyter, indicates that the flooding is not as bad as last year when the dam broke; however there is still substantial flooding. At this point much of the damage is in areas where there is adequate insurance and, lacking a community-based long term recovery organization, there is not one particular leader in the organization of the faith community's recovery efforts at this point. He was grateful for the call and said he would let us know if there is a need for a National Response Team member or financial assistance. Attempts have also been made to contact the Presbytery of Boston to offer support and assistance.
PDA stands ready to immediately respond with funds from One Great Hour of Sharing or time and assistance from the National Response Team once specific needs have been identified by presbytery staff in the affected areas.
Please remember the people of the Northeastern United States affected by these floods in your prayers. |
