A combination of torrential rain and a warm spell that rapidly melted ice and snow from the Cascade Mountains has caused widespread flooding across western Washington and Oregon.
Much of the flooding is in areas still recovering from inundation last year. Flooding then prompted federal disaster declarations in Washington and northwest Oregon, where long-term recovery needs will continue for survivors of this disaster.
PDA response
Four members of the PDA National Response Team (PDA-NRT) have been deployed to bring a witness of God’s love and comfort to church leaders and communities affected by the disaster. Bill and Liz Branch have been meeting with the Presbytery of Olympia in Lakewood, Washington, while Carol and David Legg have been meeting with the Presbytery of the Cascades and Presbytery of North Puget Sound in Portland, Oregon, and Everett, Washington.
The presbytery offices have been in contact with churches in the affected areas and called a gathering of pastors and elders in the most severely impacted areas to meet with the members of the PDA-NRT.
One Great Hour of Sharing and designated funds have also been made available to the affected presbyteries. Funds have already been sent to the Presbytery of Olympia in Lakewood, Washington, to help in their response efforts.
