Back-to-back storms pounded the coastal areas of Washington and Oregon, causing massive flooding that knocked out power, forced the closing of schools and businesses and caused the evacuation of hundreds of families and the deaths of at least seven people. Washed-out and flooded roads are keeping many coastal communities isolated, limiting rescue and relief operations primarily to helicopters. The governors of both states have declared states of emergency.
PDA has been in contact with Presbyterian middle governing bodies in the affected areas and stands ready to provide whatever assistance is deemed appropriate. Flood waters are just now beginning to recede so that assessment of the damage and need can be determined.
There has not yet been a request for volunteer work teams to help with clean-up and/or recovery efforts. Information on this need will be posted to the PDA Web site when teams are needed, or you can call the PDA Call Center at (866) 732-6121 to pre-register your team. |
