First Presbyterian Church, Port Charlotte, Florida, has vivid memories of the devastation that hurricanes can cause. In 2004 Hurricane Charley caused over $2 million worth of damage to the buildings of this congregation and so severely damaged the homes of over 200 of its members that they had to relocate to temporary homes for almost a year.
But they remember that Peace River Presbytery and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance came to their aid immediately. Drawing on the memory of how much this support meant to them, and with their church's buildings still not repaired, this congregation reached deep into their pockets and collected $10,000 to go to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
