Presbyterians join relief volunteers in Mississippi

CHARLESTON — Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston have joined the national Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program to bring help and hope to survivors who are working to rebuild their lives.
Five members of the local church recently returned from five days of volunteer work in Pearlington, Mississippi, where they built decks, installed insulation and hung drywall. They also assisted with food preparation for large numbers of volunteers from all over the country.
The team stayed at the Pearlington Presbyterian Volunteer Village. PDA operates six volunteer villages along the ravaged coast, providing hospitality to work teams and connecting them to families in need.
Each village can host between 90 to 120 volunteers at a time. The villages are completely self-contained communities, where team members participate in cleaning and cooking for the volunteers.
PDA plans to keep the Volunteer Villages open for another five years. |
