Youth Take Action for Hurricane Victims

by Julie Krager
April 2006

After the hurricane hit several states our community felt saddened and helpless. I am the youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Wyandotte, Michigan (near Detroit). Like many, I try to instill godly values and sensitivity to others in our teenagers. I was blown away to see how they responded, without my prompting, to the victims. My students, who range from 6th thru 12th grades, organized their own car wash for all the victims. It ended up being somewhat of a cold day (weather is never predictable in Michigan!) but the students were driven by a need greater then their comfort to provide help for so many that had lost so much. They raised $225.00, which they donated to a ministry that was providing new resources for churches and youth ministries that had lost everything.

They also spent hours making hand-made cards for the victims. Our church organized a collection spot to donate food, clothing, furniture, and supplies to those families that were settling in our area. The youth came several times to organize the supplies and several of the older boys moved heavy items and picked up furniture that had been donated.   Photo of card saying "Never Lose Hope"

I am so proud to see how our students felt compassion and love for strangers hundreds of miles away. This act of service and selflessness inspired several other local projects in my students (i.e. serving the homeless, raking leaves for elderly people, and delivering special gifts to neighbors at Christmas time.) God continues to use my students to inspire and surprise my expectations and ambitions.

The cards made by these students were sent through the Presbytery of Mississippi, which appreciated the kind outpouring of care from the Michigan youth group.
