Mid-Kentucky Presbytery responds to Hurricane Katrina

Background Information

Representatives from several churches within the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky met on Tuesday, October 4 at Harvey Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church to discuss one possible response to the destructive forces unleashed recently by hurricane Katrina. Twenty-eight individuals listened to a proposal, offered their suggestions, and discussed the matter together. It was a productive, positively focused meeting. Some of the details of that discussion and the plans they produced are described in the following paragraphs.

A follow-up meeting will be held at the same place on October 25 at 4pm. All interested parties are welcome. The primary agenda for this meeting will be to prepare for the November mission trips to Gautier, Mississippi.

Team Gautier responds to Hurricane Katrina

Churches of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery are joining together to join with the people of First Presbyterian Church of Gautier (pronounced Go-Shay), Mississippi, to help rebuild their church and surrounding community. Two mission trips are planned for November. The first leaves on the 5th, and returns on the 12th. The second leaves the 12th and returns the 19th. We're thinking about 12 or so people for each trip, representing the sixteen churches that have shown interest in this project. Lord willing, we'll be going back to Gautier for a longer series of mission trips in 2006.

Partnership on the Gulf

The Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky is committing itself to some significant work in the lower part of our Synod. A partnership is being forged between interested churches and the First Presbyterian Church of Gautier, Mississippi. Some of our work involves hands on mission trips from here to there. Another part involves donations of money. We need to raise $10,000 from our Presbytery to be given to the Gautier church as a free will offering. That community of faith has been seriously blasted. This money, spent as they seem fit, might help them get back on their feet, physically and spiritually. Money can be sent to the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky, marked "Gautier." Thank you, churches of Mid-Kentucky, for what you are going to do.

Help wanted: a calm, organized presence in the center of a storm

Team Gautier needs a person (or two or three) with great management skills and the cheerful ability to spend a lot of time on the phone making connections between people and people, churches and churches, partners and partners, assets and deficits. Attention to detail and anticipation of problems are crucial gifts for this job. Coordinating our presbytery's efforts on behalf of Gautier, Mississippi in its rebuilding efforts is developing into a large but quite exciting a task. The successful volunteer will organize a series of mission trips which will be taken by people in and out of the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky. This is rewarding work, and will make a lot of difference in the lives of people affected by Hurricane Katrina. If you would like to help, contact the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky.
