Work team offers flood recovery assistance to neighborhood in West Virginia

I am writing this letter to thank Harry Drake and all the people involved in helping me and all my neighbors on Poplar St. My husband has had 3 knee surgeries and I had back surgery and we are not able to do the work we used to do.

Harry’s crew built us a wheelchair ramp and steps for our front porch, put all the insulation back under our house and painted our block for us. They cleaned basements, put on roofs for 3 of my neighbors and painted and built a shed for another neighbor. I could go on and on but I just wanted to let you know how much it meant to all of us. It is impossible for older people to do their own work and when you don’t have the money to hire it done you just have to live in your home the best you can. I had to climb a latter to get into my house after they raised my home above flood level and now I have a wheelchair ramp and steps due to your people. I thank you with all my heart.

My neighbors feel the same but somehow I got elected to write this letter. I know some of the people that came to help us came from nice homes but they didn’t patronize us or look down on us in anyway and that means so much to us. One old lady that lives down the street from me is not able to do any work to her house wasn’t going to let Harry’s crew come in and help her because she was ashamed of her basement because it had dirt floors and the mud and mold made a terrible smell but I told her that these people don’t care about that and they are here to help everybody so she let them clean her basement and she told me that she appreciated it so very much. They didn’t make her feel uncomfortable at all. She needs a roof in the worst way and God willing she will get one. She had no insurance and is very poor. She will not ask for help. I had to go ask her if Harry’s crew could help her.

The neighbors and I got together and made dinner for the work crews a couple of times and it just amazed me how much they appreciated it. They kept thanking us, and they was the ones that did all the work for us. Please keep up your good work as it is very much needed and appreciated by everybody…

Thank you and God Bless you and your work

Kay
