Alternative Gift Market Cards

For the first time, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is making alternative gift market cards available for purchase. This is in response to requests for such an item over the years and for specific requests received at the recent Mission Celebration '07. Proceeds from each of the cards will be put into an account designated for the particular disaster response. These disaster responses were chosen because of their magnitude or ongoing needs.

Purchase of these cards will help to provide:

  • Clean water by providing water containers or jerry cans in various international countries. Price $12
  • Bicycles to carry multiple heavy containers of water, thus affording girls more opportunity to attend school in Kenya.
    Price $20
  • Building supplies for repairing or rebuilding homes in the Gulf Coast. Price $50

Cards can be requested for use at your alternative gift market or mission fair by sending an email to PDA.

Jerry Can

Water is essential to life. When a disaster or circumstances make it impossible to access a nearby source of water, water containers (or jerry cans) provide families with a way to carry clean water for drinking and cooking.

O come let us adore Him.

A gift of love has been sent in your name to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. This gift will help provide clean water for families.

May the knowledge of this gift and God’s gift of love fill you with peace during this special season and in the New Year to come.

Bicycle

In many parts of the world, women are responsible for drawing and carrying water. The weight of water can be great. Five gallons of water — the standard size of a jerry can — can weigh about 45 pounds. Carrying such a heavy load from an early age, often for long distances, can result in serious spinal injuries.

PDA is helping the Presbyterian Church of East Africa purchase bicycles with special platforms that enable 2-3 jerry cans full of water to be carried safely, with little chance of spillage.

In addition, since the bicycles allow water to be transported faster, girls have more opportunity to attend school.

O come let us adore Him.

Rebuilding Supplies

More than 30,000 Presbyterian volunteers have generously given of themselves, working tirelessly to clean out and repair homes that were ravaged by the wind and waters from Hurricane Katrina.

As we move into the third year of recovery efforts, more homes are ready for skilled repairs and rebuilding. Thanks be to God for electricians, plumbers, carpenters and other volunteers who continue to serve hurricane survivors. Gifts for building materials help these faithful servants have the supplies they need to continue rebuilding — making the dream of returning home a reality for many more hurricane survivors.

O come let us adore Him.

May the knowledge of this gift and God’s gift of love fill you with peace during this special season and in the New Year to come.
