Environmental Consequences
of War
Through the centuries, war and preparations for war have inflicted damage
to God's creation. At times military leaders have deliberately targeted the environment
in an effort to obtain advantages against their adversaries. War and preparations
for war have indirect impacts upon the environment as well. A variety of web
sites provide information on issues of war, preparations for war, and caring
for God's world. Among them are these sites and their links that are not controlled
by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.):
One area of environmental concern is the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico,
used by the United States Navy as a bombing range. Acting on a Commissioners'
Resolution On Assisting the Inhabitants of the Island of Vieques on the Task
of Cleaning Up After the End of the Navy Bombing Practices, the 25th General
Assembly (2003) voted to: Urge the U. S. government to provide resources for
the decontamination of the land that was used by the U.S. Navy in bombing target
practice in order to ensure safe future development of that land. The Fellowship
of Reconciliation is monitoring events on Vieques. |
