Stated Clerk writes to Indian church leaders about the violence in Orissa
The following letter, signed by Gradye Parsons, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, was sent to our church partners in India on September 4, 2008.
September 4, 2008
I write as the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to assure you and the Christians of India of the prayers and solidarity of your brothers and sisters in Christ.
We have read of the murder of Swami Lakshamananda Saraswati and four others. We note the response of Christian leaders across India condemning this brutal act and appealing for restraint and harmony in the community.
We have learned with shock and grave concern of the killing of Christians and the burning of churches, homes, and institutions in Orissa. Our concern is also with the many people who have been displaced by the violence.
Our prayers and support are with you as you seek to offer a reconciling and pastoral ministry in this very difficult situation. We will encourage Presbyterians to participate in the Day of Prayer and Fasting on September 7.
We give thanks to God for the faithfulness of Christians in India and pray that this current period of persecution will soon end. We express our solidarity with you as you continue to work for justice and reconciliation. May God’s richest blessings be with you and your churches and especially with the people of Orissa during this time of suffering.
Grace and Peace,
Gradye Parsons
