On July 9, 2004, the International
Court of Justice (ICJ), principal judicial organ of the United Nations, rendered
its Advisory Opinion in the case concerning the Legal Consequences of the Construction
of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In its ruling, the ICJ
found that the construction of the wall is contrary to international law, and
that Israel is under an obligation to cease construction of the wall and dismantle
the structure that has been built so far. The General Assembly of the United
Nations voted on July 20 to call on Israel to comply with the legal obligations
as identified in the advisory opinion. Nongovernmental organizations can
now hold the United Nations accountable to implement this action. The Presbyterian
United Nations Office is among the NGOs working to do so. |
