This Year’s Offering Theme and Art

The theme for 2009 is taken from Psalm 85:10, “Justice and peace shall kiss each other.”

The art is a serigraph by John August Swanson titled PSALM 85. Learn more about about Mr. Swanson.

The Peacemaking Offering was created in 1980 to support the efforts of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to live out a deeper commitment to peacemaking as part of our faithfulness to God. It is one of four special offerings designated by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s General Assembly.

Most churches receive the Offering on World Communion Sunday, the first Sunday in October, which this year is October 4. We encourage churches to use whatever Sunday works best for them.

Each congregation is encouraged to retain 25 percent of the Offering it receives to use for local ministries of peacemaking within the church and its community. Twenty-five percent is used by presbyteries and synods, and 50 percent is used by the General Assembly ministries through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program.

In accordance with the action of the 217th General Assembly, we encourage congregations to consider directing a portion or all of their 25 percent of the Peacemaking Offering as a faithful Christian response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

This Web site offers you materials to help you promote and interpret the Peacemaking Offering in your congregation. Your church will receive a packet of materials. You can also order or download materials from this site.

If you had a problem with your Peacemaking Offering Packet

We have discovered that there were errors in the address labels on Peacemaking Offering packets that were mailed the week of May 4. The error was evidently made when several sets of constituent lists were merged for the final mailing list, then duplicate records were eliminated.

If you received a packet with the wrong name but your address, please keep and use the packet for your own church. The other church has received a packet and may also have a wrong church name on it. If you received a duplicate packet that you ordinarily do not receive and have no need of it, there are a couple of things you might do. If you know someone who is attending the Big Tent conference in Atlanta in June or the Presbyterian Women Churchwide Gathering in Louisville in July, you may have that person bring it to the Peacemaking Program booth or Mission Interpretation’s booth. You may also take it to your presbytery office, as we are asking the presbyteries to help us collect and redistribute any extras.

We deeply regret any inconvenience to you. You may contact Nancy Goodhue by email or call (888) 728-7228 x5182.
