A Long and Storied History
of Service to the Community

First Presbyterian Church of Edenton celebrated its birthday on Pentecost Sunday in a big way!
First Presbyterian Church of Edenton celebrated
its birthday on Pentecost Sunday in a big way! We contributed
its share of the Pentecost Offering to Albemarle Hospital Foundation,
which provides quality health care to the financially disadvantaged.
First Presbyterian is a small congregation
with very few children and young people. But we are sincere
with our spiritual activities and offerings in God’s service.
Our Outreach Committee has a long and storied
history of service to the community, stretching from a transportation
ministry to Marine families stationed at the local airfield
during the 1940s and 1950s, to a more recent involvement as
leaders in the formation of a Habitat for Humanity affiliate.
During the 1960s and 1970s it was home to the only integrated
preschool program and Boy Scout troop, which produced northeastern
North Carolina’s first African-American Eagle Scout. In
this period it provided the leadership to establish the ecumenical
Emergency Aid program that currently maintains a transient program,
provides emergency financial assistance, and operates a clothes
closet with an annual budget of $70,000. Its members volunteer
and occupy positions of leadership in community organizations
such as the Food Pantry, Emergency Aid, Habitat for Humanity,
the Clothes Closet, the Board of Education, and a host of civic
service clubs. Within the church family the Outreach Committee
has the responsibility for visitation of visitors to the church
and prospective new members in the community, along with promoting
special offerings for local and international missions. Each
year the church selects a family for special support at Thanksgiving
and Christmas. First Presbyterian of Edenton is the place for
anyone interested in reaching out to people in the name of Christ.
