On the first Pentecost, travelers from all over Asia Minor
journeyed to the city of Jerusalem to attend the Jewish Festival
of Weeks. The disciples in Jerusalem preached the Word of God
to these travelers and were surprised at their ability to speak
in tongues. The travelers from Asia Minor were then able to
hear the teachings of Christ in their native language. In this
way the Word of God is spread to a vast new audience.
Today, we collect the Pentecost Offering on Pentecost Sunday.
First Presbyterian in Charleston retains 40 percent of the money
collected and the remainder goes to the General Assembly. The
General Assembly uses these funds to support youth ministry
programs and child advocacy programs for children at risk.
First Presbyterian will use its portion to support our 2006
mission trip when we return to Tijuana, Mexico, in June, where
we will spread the teachings of Christ through physical work
and vacation Bible school. Much like the new audience in Jerusalem,
a new audience of at-risk children and youth of Tijuana will
learn about Gods love.
