Westwood First Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati sponsors an
after-school program for children six to ten years old who attend
the school next to the church. These kids used to go home to
an empty house, or their parents tried to patch together friends
and relatives to take care of them. Now they come to the church
on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 1:45 to
5:30 for group conversation (with prayer), tutoring until their
homework is completed, recreation in the gym or on the playground,
and snacks. We use volunteers from a local high school science
club for a once-a-week science experiment. Volunteers from the
congregation and a local Catholic girls high school take
the children to the local library to check out books. We have
field trips to reward reading and good behavior, and even have
a weekly visit from a pet dog.
Pentecost Offering funds help us pay a director and co-director
who provide consistent care and discipline. Kidz Hood
is our contribution to our neighborhood children and we are
proud of it.
