First Presbyterian’s 40 percent share of the Pentecost Offering supports the ministries of Women’s Haven in Duncan, Oklahoma. Mission Committee Chair Pat Hale writes, “Duncan is very blessed to have such a caring organization.” Women’s Haven is committed to the elimination of personal and societal violence. It provides a 24-hour crisis line, crisis interventions, an emergency shelter, hospital advocacy, courthouse advocacy, counseling, and cell phones for victims of domestic abuse who qualify. The point of entry to break the cycle of domestic violence is often women, but help is available for all family members. Classes that meet weekly at First Presbyterian Church can help abusers achieve a nonviolent approach to dealing with stress. Children are also a primary focus of ministry at Women’s Haven. Those who witness violence in the home or are abused are highly likely to become abusers themselves when they become adults.
