In Duncan, Oklahoma, the care of foster children is the sole responsibility of state and federal agencies. However, the financial support these government agencies are able to provide foster families is minimal, covering basic needs but not much else. So our community formed a nonprofit group called Citizens for Children that provides some additional support for these families. The group hosts a couple of parties each year for the children and their foster families. Group members also contribute a backpack full of school supplies for foster and natural children in these homes, and at Christmas they give each child a gift. They also try to meet special needs as they arise. Because the amount of help Citizens for Children can provide is limited by the amount of money available, First Presbyterian Church chose this year to contribute our share of the Pentecost Offering to help these children at risk and their families.
