First Presbyterian Church was deciding how to invest its 40
percent of the Pentecost Offering. A member of the Stewardship
and Mission Committee whose wife is a teacher suggested they
look to the schools for an idea. In light of recent budget cuts,
it seemed like a good choice. The school superintendent gave
them a couple of ideas from which they chose the Student Need
Fund. It provides scholarship funds for children whose parents
cannot afford to pay for student field trips. Many families
fall into this category. With peer pressure as it is,
writes Norma Conner, we want to reach out to the children
who otherwise cannot go with their classmateswho run the
risk of being left behind. Pentecost Offering funds make
it possible for children to go on field trips in which they
might have been unable to participate.
