In spring 2002, the Ministerial Association of Goldfield, Iowa, established an Ecumenical Preschool Scholarship Fund to assist Goldfield residents in sending their three- and four-year old children to preschool. We are very fortunate to have preschool available in our area, but the monthly cost of the program is quite high and often prohibitive for many families. Research has shown that children who have been to preschool have greater success academically than those who have not. Preschool education is especially helpful for children from lower-income families that often cannot afford the tuition costs. Goldfield United Presbyterian wanted to help make preschool affordable for all our neighborhood children. The session decided it would be most appropriate that our 40 percent of the Pentecost Offering be used for scholarships for the Ecumenical Preschool.
