Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Nellysford, Virginia, will
use its share of the Pentecost Offering to send young people
in our community to summer day and overnight camps. We live
in a rural area where many young people rarely experience life
outside of the mountains and hollows where they liveoften
in rundown houses or trailers. Some come from homes that still
do not have indoor plumbing. We use our offering money to send
younger children to the county recreational summer day programs
and older elementary children and adolescents to overnight and
adventure camp at Hanover Presbytery Camp and Browns Summit
Youth Camp.
As one young man said when he learned he was going to camp
this year (in a neighboring state), Ive never been
out of state in my whole life! For him and for many others,
the spirit of Pentecost is felt in the offering of new breath
and new life though summer camp. This great idea for using our
offering comes from an elder, Barbara Powell, who grew
up in the woods, as she puts it, and currently serves
on our church mission committee and as the chairperson of our
stewardship committee.
