Serious Mental Illness: Seeking A Comprehensive Christian Response

Cover of the Serious Mental Illness: Seeking A Comprehensive Christian Response

This study guide provides four sessions for personal and class discussion and reflection.  These sessions encourage and challenge the reader to think about ways people living with mental illness are included and/or excluded from participating in the work of the church and society in general.  The Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP) will take the feedback obtained through this study into consideration as it develops a policy statement for action by the 218th General Assembly (2006).

Honest Talk About Serious Mental Illness

Adolescence is often a roller-coaster ride for youth. It is a time when youth face tremendous pressures and changes that can lead to soaring highs and sinking lows. It is only natural that youth wonder if what they are feeling is "normal." This video will help them understand the difference between these normal feelings and the more serious signs of mental illness.

As they view this program, they will explore causes and effects of depression, anxiety, manic depression and schizophrenia. They will also learn the important role of family, community and the church in supporting a person with a serious mental illness. The video, divided into four segments, can be used as a one-time session or over a period of weeks.

Mental Illness Worship Resource

This resource is a nice array of Presbyterian worship services designed to incorporate concerns of mental illness during worship. Using the services in this booklet (or parts of these services) is a wonderful way to embrace those in your congregation who are dealing with mental illness and those who support them (as family members, friends or professionals). This resource also is a way to raise awareness of the issue from the pulpit. Step-by-step services are arranged, or the prayers, meditations, suggested hymns and scripture readings may be used to create an individualized worship service. From a morning prayer service to an evening prayer service to a service for a Mental Illness Awareness Day, this resource has a variety of ways to incorporate the concerns of mental illness into worship.
