About the artist for the 2010–2011 Presbyterian Planning Calendar

Kelly Rider
Kelly Rider has a BFA in painting from Pratt Institute and an MFA in book and paper arts from Columbia College Chicago’s Center for Book and Paper Arts. As an artist, Kelly finds it hard to content herself with one art form. Instead, she enjoys mixing media and method, combining aspects of painting, printmaking and collage in her work, with a special focus on creating artists’ books and interactive paper sculptures. She has taught art to children and adults in New Mexico, Chicago and now Riverside, California, where she recently moved with her husband and three children.
Kelly grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and along with her family was an active member of Boulder’s First Presbyterian Church. As a college graduate, Kelly volunteered for the PC(USA) at the Ghost Ranch Conference Center in Abiquiu, New Mexico, and worked as a mission volunteer for the John Hyson Presbyterian Mission School in Chimayó, New Mexico. Kelly spent a year as a Young Adult Volunteer in the “Time For God” program in Nottingham, England, where she was a youth worker. She has been a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The Artist’s Words about the Planning Calendar Art
When I began designing the artwork for the Planning Calendar, I did not want to invent the many figures that would appear in each piece. In order to better flesh out my sketches, I contacted friends throughout the church and asked them for photographs of their congregations and communities to use for the art. I am grateful for these shared pictures that enabled me to draw from an existing church community because I like the idea of grounding the art in today’s world with depictions of real people taking part in Christian life. My intention is for the images to feel intimate, as if one could step right into the scene and join the gathering. For that reason, many of the pieces focus on hands — hands that share, work, praise, receive, make music, and pray — hands that could be your hands or mine, everyone’s hands, part of the kingdom.
