Nurturing Faith Together

The Rev. Dr. Karen-Marie Yust, associate professor of Christian education, Union-PSCE, and members of the POINT network share insights and ideas at the 2009 event in San Antonio, Texas. Photos by Linda Badger Becker
Presbyterians Organized in Nurture and Teaching (POINT) gathered in San Antonio, Texas, January 27-28, 2009, for annual training. The Rev. Dr. Karen-Marie Yust, associate professor of Christian education, Union-PSCE, helped members of the network explore the theme Nurturing Faith Together.
Dr. Yust gave permission to post her PowerPoint presentation and continue the conversation around the theories presented. Review her insights and guidelines for helping churches plan Christian education and Bible study for all ages. Watch the presentation. Download the presentation in Power Point format. After a review of age-level faith development theory and practice, Dr. Yust introduced a practical experience. She guided the exercise with questions, asking participants to refer back to what was learned in the presentation of theory.
Small groups were given the task to design an event around the interpretation of scripture with a particular age group, setting goals and planning appropriate activities. The same Scripture from the coming Sunday's lectionary was used for all age groups. Explore the variety of ideas and notes collected from this faith formation exercise.
Consider how faith formation theory and a similar activity of biblical interpretation could be used to train teachers, guide planning and allow congregations to open the Bible with all ages.

Happy Birthday, Presbyterians Organized in Nurture & Teaching!
The POINT ministry was authorized by the General Assembly 10 years ago this year with the first gathering in 2000. In recognition of this milestone, five and 10 year members were recognized at this year's training event. A big thank you to all members for the years of service to the educational ministry of the church through POINT.

Trust and Obey
Linda Badger Becker, general presbyter for the Presbytery of Genesee Valley, created a photo meditation, Trust and Obey, for morning prayer at the 2009 POINT event.
