God, the People and the Covenant
Vol. 8 No. 3
This quarter focuses on the covenant of God with the people of Israel. God's faithfulness to the covenant is shown throughout the monarchy, the exile and the restoration of the people to Jerusalem. Through the years the people wavered between faithfulness and faithlessness to the covenant. Various prophets and kings led the way in restoring their covenant relationship with God. The ark, the temple, the ritual of the Festival of Booths and prayers speak of the covenant. |

Unit I, "Signs of God's Covenant," begins with the ark of the covenant, the symbol of God's presence with the people of Israel, which David brought into Jerusalem. God made a covenant with David, to establish his house forever and to appoint a place for the people. Solomon later built a more permanent place for the ark to rest. In his prayer of dedication of the temple, Solomon declared that God had kept covenant and had fulfilled God's promise. The risen Christ in Luke instructed the disciples so they would understand that God's promises about him in the law of Moses and the prophets had been fulfilled. The unit ends with Josiah leading the people of Judah in a renewal of covenant with God. |

Unit II, "The Covenant in Exile," studies Daniel and his three friends as they began life in the foreign land of Babylon. Even in Babylon, these four men kept their covenant with God and found that God was faithful to them. We see God's faithfulness in the familiar stories of the food forbidden to Jews, the fiery furnace and the lion's den. We also see it in Daniel's prayer in chapter 9. |

Unit III, "Restoration and Covenant Renewal," focuses on a time when exiled Israelites were allowed to return home to Judah and Jerusalem. The study includes the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls and temple. Both were symbols of God's covenant with the people of Israel. But restoration and renewal of the people themselves was also needed. Ezra called the returned exiles to hear the word of God's law and to begin observing it once again. |
