Children's Defense Fund

By Rita Oestreich

2005, Issue 3

Background
The Children's Defense Fund (CDF), founded by Marian Wright Edelman in 1973 and located in Washington, D.C., supports many programs designed to help families with children living in poverty throughout the United States.

Biblical/Theological Dimensions
A great diversity of religious groups and individuals support CDF. The call of many religions to protect children is reflected in the CDF motto and logo,"Dear Lord, be good to me; the sea is so wide and my boat is so small." The current annual program, "Say That I'm a Child of God," offers National Observances of Children's Sabbath materials for the use of all faiths in a special Sabbath worship service honoring children.

PC(USA) and PW's Positions on Children's Defense Fund

The General Assembly, on several occasions, has called for the church to advocate the development and rights of children nationally and globally, specifically calling for adequate health care, education, housing, child care and protection from abuse and exploitation. Marian Wright Edelman spoke about the Children's Defense Fund and its need for support from all religious faiths at General Assembly in 2002. Presbyterian Women (PW) committed to a five-year period of support for CDF at their Business Meeting at the 2003 Churchwide Gathering of PW.
