2005 PW Global Exchange to
Brazil Participant Story
Where Two or More Are Gathered

Presbyterian churches are
alive and well in Brazil. Several of the Global Exchange participants
attended a worship service at the United Presbyterian Church
in Acari (Igreja Presbiteriana Unida em Acari) in Rio de Janeiro.
Greeters were not only at the front door, but wandered through
the congregation before the service began. Children greeted
us and were eager to speak with us in English. Although there
were only about 60 in attendance, the spirit was contagious. |

The text for the service was Psalm 133,
which highlights unity. The service was created to reflect
this unity. The hymns and songs were in Portuguese, but with
the help of a praise band, we were able to sing together the
familiar words, "Glory, Glory Hallelujah." We were
invited to share some of our songs, then we answered questions
about our individual churches and how we are disciples in our
communities. Kathryn Baker, PW vice moderator for mission relationships,
was invited to participate in leading the service. |

This socially active congregation
has been on this site for 25 years. Members are engaged in
social projects, including a program that educates 50 children
from grades 1–8 and feeds them three meals a day. This
program receives $900 each month in state support. There are
also special programs designed to bring college women and young
adults to church. The congregation supports outreach that includes
partnering with other churches throughout the presbytery through
music and sports activities. |

Children joined the worship service after
Sunday school was over. Photo by Barbara
Snyder I will always remember the way that
the Reverend Carlos Alberto da Silva greeted the children as
they came into the worship service from Sunday school. The
pastor said, "We greet the children of the church." I
felt that it was symbolic of our Lord saying, "Let the
children come unto me." The enthusiasm and hospitality
of this church will remain with me, always. |
