The Creative Ministries Offering Committee of Presbyterian Women met in Louisville, Kentucky, in February 2008 and approved grants totaling $516,239.50 from the 2007 Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women. Twenty-eight projects were chosen from 139 proposals; 13 projects are in the United States and 15 are international.

Projects must meet criteria established by the committee:

  • Be consistent with the mission concerns and policies of the PC(USA)
  • Show a purpose that meets basic human needs
  • Provide a form of aid that relates directly to the people being served
  • Be a creative project less than three years old or a new direction for an existing program

The 2008 Presbyterian Women Thank Offering logo.The committee selects programs based on merit, regardless of geographic location. At least 40 percent of the Thank Offering funds go to health-related projects.

 
             
 
 
 
 
 
 

International projects

Frontera de Cristo
Just Trade Center, Mexico, $20,000

Purchase coffee roasters for several communities in Mexico, creating more jobs in fair-trade production of coffee

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Presbyterian Border Ministry is a joint labor of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and National Presbyterian Church of Mexico.  It is called to share a holistic gospel with those who live along the 2,000 mile United States/Mexico border, by responding to the spiritual, emotional, physical and material needs of the people living in the border area.  Presbyterian Border Ministry (PBM) engages in new church development and ministries of compassion; promotes mission education and justice in all areas; and collaborates with existing border churches.

Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch
Capacity Building for the Hearing Impaired to Use Computers, Damascus, Syria, $20,000

Offer training and education to people with hearing impairments, enabling them to find jobs and become self-reliant

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Greek Orthodox Church seeks to be an incarnation of Christ’s love for all people by preaching the gospel, calling believers to be disciples and enacting Christ’s compassion  toward people who are poor, needy or sick. In living in a multi-faith society, where Christians are a minority, the Orthodox Church encourages learning how to live with people of other faiths and offering a Christian witness to national issues.

Church of Central Africa, Presbyterian
Child-to-Child Health Clubs, Mzuzu, Malawi, $30,000

Create a community feeding and education program to treat and prevent malnutrition in children

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Health Department of the Synod of Livingstonia provides health care services, promotes health and proclaims a clear Christian witness.  It is one department within the Synod of Livingstonia, which is one of three Synods of the Church of Central Africa, Presbyterian (CCAP), a partner of the PC(USA). 

Church Center for the Family of the Presbyterian Community of Congo, Bakery and Restaurant Project, Mbujimayi, Democratic Republic of Congo, $15,000

Build a restaurant and bakery that will employ women, providing them a source of income

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Church Center for the Family is a sub-council of PC(USA)’s partner in rural Congo, the Presbyterian Community of Congo (CPC).  The Church Center’s Department of Women provides a wide range of programs aimed at improving the lives of women and children.  Programs include vocational training, literacy education, health education (particularly HIV/AIDS prevention), environmental improvements and education for young people and newly-married couples on Christian principles.

Russia Round Table, Russian Orthodox Church
Training and Intervention Program for Special-needs Children, Moscow, Russia, $14,000

Train church workers, university students and therapists working with children who have autism or other conditions in early diagnostic tools and intervention strategies

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Russia Round Table promotes the development of religious education and social services in the Russian Orthodox Church through specific programs and projects. The social service of the Church locally is carried out in every parish in various forms, including the education of children and care for the elderly.

The Gathering USA, Inc.
Mission Emanuel Women’s Cooperative
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, $20,000

Hire a coordinator to expand funding sources for the cooperative and enlarge retail markets for selling the crafts created by women

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Mission Emanuel, an ongoing Dominican Republic outreach ministry of The Gathering USA, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that brings together missionaries from around the world to improve the lives of the Dominican people. Mission Emanuel offers programs for health care, education and improved living conditions, while sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.  The Women’s Cooperative provides an avenue for women in the community to make a viable income.

Livingstonia Synod AIDS Program
Community HIV/AIDS Resource Center, Ekwendeni, Malawi, $30,000

Further develop the facilities of the resource center so that it may expand training on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support activities

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Livingstonia Synod AIDS Program (LISAP) coordinates HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs, as well as care and support activities. LISAP also provides training and facilitation to church- and community-based groups in the area. Large numbers of visitors from within and outside Malawi come to LISAP to learn more about how grassroots organizations can make an effective and sustainable response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Education for Leadership and Network Development (ELAND)
Intashat Maasai Women Milk Production and Marketing Project, Ngong Hills, Kenya, $20,000

Purchase equipment to process and transport milk that will be sold by economically disadvantaged, rural Maasai women

Mission/Purpose Statement:
ELAND is a grassroots organization that addresses the urgent needs of the Maasai  people of Kenya.  Through culturally appropriate educational, social, health and economic programs, ELAND empowers indigenous Maasai  people to improve their quality of life. The Milk Project will streamline milk production, transportation and marketing to help women lift themselves from poverty.

The Family Development Charitable Society/Society for Elderly People, Short-term/Respite Care Program
Beit Sahour, Palestine, $40,000

Provide short-term and respite care for elderly people who need care that cannot be provided by their families

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Society for Elderly People is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that works with the Health Work Committee of Palestine.  They offer weekly health check-ups, health awareness programs, exercise and fitness classes, day trips around Bethlehem, recreational opportunities and social and religious events on certain traditional holidays.

HARAN Ministry, International
Nanphalong Community Development Center, Manipur, India, $8,000

Develop leadership skills and provide agricultural training for villagers so that they may increase their incomes and living standards

Mission/Purpose Statement:
HARAN (Helping all Races and Nations) Ministry, International was established in 2005 to help people experience God’s kingdom through a holistic approach of education, health, work and life skills. Located along the border between Manipur, India and Burma’s Tamu Valley, the Center will provide a safe environment for learning and teaching of agricultural skills, Christian education, literacy, health, hygiene and community leadership skills.

Hill Tribes Youth
Construction of a Maternity Ward/Youth Training Center, Accra, Ghana, $20,000

Build a maternity ward and offer classes in hygiene, infant care and job-related skills

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Hill Tribes Youth trains youth and women as traditional birth attendants to lower the number of mother and infant deaths. They work to empower pregnant women and caregivers, as well as encouraging community participation to alleviate poverty and hunger. The community programs include training youth in leadership skills, improving farming techniques, improving batik tie and dye production.

Evangelical Presbyterian Church — Bubiasie
“Give Life in Its Fullness” Mosquito Net Program, Accra, Ghana, $9,000

Purchase and distribute 3,000 mosquito nets to pregnant mothers, children under five and nursing mothers

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Evangelical Presbyterian Church — Bubiasie works to bring light where there is darkness, spread the good news and bring relief to people who are suffering. Malaria is the leading cause of death among children under five in Africa. The provision of mosquito nets to children under five years old and to pregnant women will reduce deaths from malaria.

Comprehensive Rural Health Project
“We Can Survive and Thrive” — Healthy Families with Single Mothers , Maharashtra, India, $20,000

Offer training in income-generating activities as well as physical, social and spiritual support for single mothers

Mission /Purpose Statement:
The Comprehensive Rural Health Project works toward a vision of  communities where families are healthy and enjoy fulfilling lives.  CRHP empowers people who are poor or marginalized, enabling them to achieve their full potential through a value-based approach with equity and justice.  By mobilizing and educating communities, they help people in Maharashtra find health care and live free from poverty, hunger and violence.

Institute of Self-Development and Social Action (ISSA)
Caring for HIV/AIDS Children and Other Children Left Behind, Maharashtra, India, $17,600

Purchase food, medicine and school supplies for abandoned children and children with HIV/AIDS

Mission/Purpose Statement:
ISSA cares for children who have been abandoned or who have HIV/AIDS. They offer compassion, hope and support to the children to promote self-development and human dignity. They believe that the spiritual nurturing of each individual is essential for holistic development. 

Interchurch Medical Assistance, Inc.
Medicine Box Program
Malawi and Democratic Republic of Congo, $21,937.50

Deliver 55 medicine boxes with vitamins, medicine and first-aid supplies to hospitals in Malawi and Congo

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Interchurch Medical Assistance, Inc. is an association of 12 Protestant relief and development agencies. IMA World Health assists church-run hospitals and community clinics in developing countries by providing material resources, training and program management. The IMA Medicine Box program delivers basic medicines and medical supplies to Presbyterian hospitals in Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
