The Creative Ministries Offering Committee of Presbyterian Women met in Louisville, Kentucky, in February 2008 and approved grants totaling $516,239.50 from the 2007 Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women. Twenty-eight projects were chosen from 139 proposals; 13 projects are in the United States and 15 are international.

Projects must meet criteria established by the committee including:

  • consistency with the mission concerns and policies of the PC(USA),
  • a purpose that meets basic human needs,
  • providing a form of aid that relates directly to the people being served and
  • being a creative project less than three years old or a new direction for an existing program.
The 2008 Presbyterian Women Thank Offering logo.The committee selects programs based on merit, regardless of geographic location. At least 40 percent of the Thank Offering funds go to health-related projects.
 
             
 
 
 
 
 
 

Synod of the Lakes and Prairies

Common Cup Ministry
Common Cup Migrant Ministry, Hutchinson, Minnesota, $30,000

Assist seasonal migrant workers with basic needs, particularly housing

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Common Cup Ministry (CCM) gathers and shares spiritual and financial resources of area churches into one “Common Cup” to minister to people in need. CCM will provide spiritual and financial outreach to more families in need, with special attention to children and single mothers. 

The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota
Worthington Immigration Project, Saint Paul, Minnesota, $10,000

Serve the legal needs of the growing immigrant and refugee communities in rural Minnesota

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota provides quality immigration legal services and law-related education to meet the steadily increasing needs of Minnesota’s growing immigrant and refugee communities. The Worthington Immigration Project specifically will support legal services, education, advocacy and outreach to the growing immigrant and refugee communities in Worthington and southwestern Minnesota.

Northminster Presbyterian Church
Angel’s Arms Program, Peoria, Illinois, $10,000

Offer mothers of children with special needs an opportunity to attend spiritually-nurturing activities while the children participate in programs designed to meet those needs

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Angel’s Arms provides a positive spiritual environment for all of God’s children, regardless of age or abilities, and encourages learning from and appreciating everyone. The program supports families with children who have special needs so that they may all participate fully in worship services and church activities.

Synod of Living Waters

Northwest Alabama Community Health and Dental Clinic
Community Health Clinic, Florence, Alabama, $25,000

Provide health check-ups and cancer screening to women with low incomes and no health insurance

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Northwest Alabama Community Health and Dental Clinic is a project of the Northwest Alabama Community Health Association. The clinic provides free health care services for low income residents in a convenient location.  Volunteer doctors and nurses will provide health check-ups and cancer screenings, including pap smears and breast exams, for women ages 4l–64.



The Hospitality Hub, Calvary Episcopal Church
The Hospitality Hub, Memphis, Tennessee, $10,000

Connect people in downtown Memphis who are homeless with resources to help them achieve physical, mental, spiritual and economic stability

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Hospitality Hub (HUB) is a new program of Calvary Episcopal Church in collaboration with the Downtown Churches Association that has been developed to provide services to homeless persons (guests) in downtown Memphis, Tennessee.  The Hospitality Hub provides a spiritual sanctuary for Memphis’s homeless community, particularly people who are newly homeless, where they can be connected to resources to help them achieve physical, mental, spiritual and economic stability.

Synod of Mid-Atlantic

New Dublin Presbyterian Women
Beulah House “Gifted Care” Program, Dublin, Virginia, $9,420

Provide nursing care for people who are terminally ill and lack the resources to receive other care

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The Presbyterian Women of New Dublin Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) seek to grow in Christ’s likeness, to love their neighbors and to identify needs in their community and throughout the world where they might make a difference.  PW of New Dublin with other churches and organizations in the area purchased, renovated and furnished Beulah House, Inc. in Dublin, Virginia, to respond to the need for hospice and palliative care in the New River Valley.

Urban Ministries of Durham, Inc.
Help Home Outreach Project, Durham, North Carolina, $10,000

Provide food, shelter and social service assistance for veterans with disabilities

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Every year, Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD) provides food, clothing, shelter and supportive services to more than 6,000 people in Durham who are in need.  The agency seeks to sustain the physical, spiritual and emotional health of people who are homeless, hungry or have low incomes. The Help Home Outreach Project will assist people who are chronically homeless in applying for disability benefits from SSA and to help them transition to fully integrated lives.
 
             
 
 

Synod of the Northeast

The Center for Middle East Studies, Inc.
The Cultural Peace Camp, Buffalo, New York, $11,000

Help children develop conflict resolution skills and promote understanding and acceptance of diversity 

Mission/Purpose Statement:
With the motto “Peace Through Mutual Understanding,” the Center for Middle East Studies, Inc. promotes peace in the Middle East by raising awareness of Middle Eastern history and culture through programmatic initiatives.  The Center educates children and youth in the Buffalo area through a cultural peace camp; after-school programs that help refugee/immigrant students with their English reading and writing skills; workshops on peace and alternatives to violence. The Center also offers adult programs on Middle East issues, such as international speakers, fundraising dinners, presentations, workshops, public forums and retreats.

Walking, Teaching and Serving Project
San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, $20,000

Improve the El Guacio center with computer equipment, additional showers and toilets in order to facilitate larger conferences and retreats

Mission/Purpose Statement:
Caminando, Educando y Sirviendo/Walking, Teaching and Serving provides retreats, conferences and workshops on the needs of women and children.

Thornwell Home for Children
Dental Clinic Upgrades, Clinton, South Carolina, $20,282

Upgrade clinic that provides dental care services for children living at Thornwell Home; Thornwell offers care to children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected

Mission/Purpose Statement:
A ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, Thornwell is a joyful Christian community that offers hope and wholeness to children and families.

Covenant Presbyterian Church
Whiz Kids Tutoring/Mentoring Program, Albany, Georgia, $30,000

Purchase a 20-passenger van to provide transportation from school to tutoring and home for at-risk children

Mission/Purpose Statement: Covenant Presbyterian Church’s mission is to know Christ and to make Christ known to all people. Through the Whiz Kids program, volunteer tutors provide one-on-one tutoring and then the children attend “Club,” a time to learn about God’s love for them. 

South Asian Task Force
South Asian Ministries, Pompano Beach, Florida, $20,000

Expand internet resources and radio ministry, which offer fellowship, nurture and support for South Asian immigrants, particularly women who have been abused

Mission/Purpose Statement:
The South Asian Task Force provides an opportunity for South Asian Christians to come together for worship, fellowship, nurture and to experience the love and care of Jesus Christ. The Task Force provides immigration service assistance, pastoral care, Bible study, fellowship and weekly radio outreach in the Urdu, Hindi, and Punjab languages.

Children’s Health Pantry, Bridgeport Presbyterian Church
“A New Book for Every Child” Project, Bridgeport, West Virginia, $5,000

Provide at-risk children with books to help decrease illiteracy, raise self-esteem and improve school attendance

Mission/Purpose Statement:
In keeping with the priorities of Bridgeport Presbyterian Church, the Children’s Health Pantry helps at-risk children by providing basic health care products to improve health and school attendance.  “A New Book for Every Child” will help children further develop their minds and imaginations.
