General Directions for Quilt Squares

The most important factor is the size of the quilt square. Its finished size must be 12 inches by 12 inches, so that no one will feel that her gift is less important than someone else’s gift. Other than that, you may use traditional quilt patterns or create your own pattern. Use traditional quilting and/or appliquéing techniques, or innovative and modern methods, patterns and designs. Use a favorite design of yours, or one that relates to the Gathering theme or scripture, or women’s issues. The Gathering logo provides wonderful colors to work with, but any colors may be used. Although the finished piece might never be washed, it’s helpful to use pre-washed, 100 percent cotton fabric.

Front
Prepare the quilt piece you have designed. Use lightweight batting and backing. Work may be done by hand or machine.

Back
The back should be plain (except for the optional step mentioned under “Finishing”). Unlike last time, there will not be a special backing to attach.

Finishing
Sew the front and the back together. Sew right sides together, then turn and slip-stitch the opening. Add ¼ inch to ½ inch hand quilting around the edge; this will stabilize the finished piece. Or, sew wrong sides together and add binding. You are welcome to stitch your name and your synod’s name in the lower right hand corner of the back of the piece. Squares should be mailed by January 20, 2009.

Questions and completed quilt squares should be sent to
