Who We Are

Purpose

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) professes that racism, in all its forms, is contrary to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet, it acknowledges that racism is a reality in both church and society. In faithful witness to the love of Christ, the church is committed to confronting the ideology of racism and racial oppression, working to overcome racism with prayer, discernment and worship-based action.

Responsibilities

The Office for Racial Justice Advocacy works with a wide variety of program areas and entities within the denomination to assist the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in fulfilling its expressed commitment to become an open, inclusive and racially just church. The office joins with both denominational and ecumenical partners to work for similar goals in society by implementing racial justice programs across the denomination. There are several components that the office administers in pursuit of these goals.

In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God's image male and female, of every race and people to live as on community

Policy Development

The Office for Racial Justice Advocacy provides a leading role in developing a racial justice policy base for the church to address current and emerging issues of racial justice. In partnership with other program areas, it coordinates the development of nationally based initiatives that reflect church policy on equity and justice, and develops resources for governing bodies and congregations engaged in racial justice ministries.

A vision for the 21st century ...

God created human beings, a diverse family, to live together and to love one another as God loves us. We violate God's intention for the human family by creating false categories of value and identity, based on identifiable characteristics such as place of origin and skin color. We use these categories to create a race-based society which benefits some while oppressing others.

We affirm that racism is a sin which violates God's purpose for humanity and is contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We confess our complicity in the creation and maintenance of racist structures and systems in all parts of our nation's life, including the church itself. We commit to confront spiritually the idolatry and ideology of white supremacy and white privilege. We also covenant to become an antiracism community, resisting racial oppression and working to overcome racism within our own life and the life of the society by blending social analysis, institutional reconstruction and individual healing with discernment, prayer and worship-based action.
