The percentage of active clergy who are women has been increasing steadily.
In 1984, 8% of active clergy were women. By 2000, the percentage had increased
to 22%. Similar increases can be seen in the percentage of candidates for ministry
who are women. Only one-third of candidates were female in 1984. In 2000, about
one-half (53%) were female, suggesting that the percentage of active clergy
who are women will continue to rise in the coming years.
