Number of Congregations by Year Organized

Congregations by Year Organized

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) includes many churches with long histories. The oldest three churches currently affiliated with the PCUSA were established in 1640, and one-half of our congregations (49%) were established before the turn of the century.

This figure shows the large number of new churches that were organized during the baby-boom years. In fact, over 300 of our current churches were organized between 1956 and 1958. In contrast, only 122 were organized in the most recent three years.

Note that the number of churches organized each year includes churches resulting from merger. In the last ten years, about 13 churches per year were organized as a result of mergers.
