Congregational Statistics: End of Year 1995

Horizons Magazine

Respondents were asked if members in their congregations were aware of Horizons, the official magazine and Bible study of Presbyterian Women. More than three-fourths (77%) reported that individuals were aware of Horizons, 10% said they didn't know, and 12% checked "no." Figures from the 1989 and 1990 editions of Congregational Statistics, when the same question was asked, reveal that familiarity with Horizons is increasing. In 1989, 60% reported that individuals in their congregations knew about Horizons, and in 1990, 72% of congregations reported awareness of the resource.

"Through women's group" tends to be the most popular way Horizons is promoted within the congregation (91% use this method). Other ways the magazine is promoted is with the use of the Horizons poster (17%), with announcements in church newsletters (11%), in church bulletins (9%), in announcements during worship (6%), and "other" (5%). Subscription campaigns seem to be the least utilized method (3%). This is consistent with results for previous years in which women's groups were the primary method of promotion. (Note that while in previous years respondents gave only one response to this question, for 1995 they were asked to indicate all methods used to promote Horizons. Nonetheless, in all cases the most common method of promoting the magazine was through women's groups 53% did so in 1989 and 58% did so in 1990.)

The magazine is being used in congregations primarily as programming for women's groups (77%). Nonetheless, many congregations use it in other ways, too, including for personal reading (35%), as a resource for the church library (23%), as a pastor's resource (21%), and for "other" purposes (5%). As for the previous question, respondents could mark more than one answer for 1995, but not for prior years. In 1989, 43% reported their congregations use Horizons for women's groups, as did 48% in 1990.

Not surprisingly, women's groups are the groups most likely to use the Horizons Bible Study (95%). Other groups using the resource include adult Christian education groups (5%), session (1%), and "other" groups (4%).
