Plaquemines Parish is at Louisiana’s southernmost tip. It’s where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico, and it is home to the United Fisheries Cooperative. It is estimated that the fishermen in Plaquemines Parish lost 90 percent of their fleet after the devastating winds and floods that followed hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Already faced with high poverty and illiteracy, this group of lifelong shrimpers, crabbers and fishermen may have been down, but they are not out. They are determined to rebuild their lives, their livelihood and their community.
