The global humanitarian effort, which includes the work of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) to respond to Haiti’s devastating earthquake faces enormous challenges, given difficult logistics, collapsed infrastructure and rising tensions. Power remains out, food supplies are dwindling and telecommunications are, as The New York Times reported, “barely functioning.”
Initial estimates of those who died, which had originally been estimated at 100,000 or even higher, were reduced by the Haitian Red Cross at about 45,000 to 50,000, though those estimates remained extremely tentative, the Times reported. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is coordinating its efforts with our ecumenical and international partners in the relief work in Haiti. Carlos Cardenas is on the ground in Port-au-Prince as part of the initial response team. The past few days’ priorities have focused on search and rescue, medical attention for those injured by the earthquake, along with food distribution for the survivors.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has issued an emergency appeal for Haiti, where millions of people have been affected by a major earthquake that struck the country on Tuesday, January 12. The exact number of casualties is unknown at this time, nor is the full extent of the damage; however, reports indicate that tens of thousands — possibly hundreds of thousands — of people are feared dead and countless others have been left homeless.
