For the past five years, Fairfax Presbyterian has participated with other faith communities in a coordinated program to serve as an overnight hypothermia shelter. Each winter season, FPC volunteers opened the church to as many as 50 homeless guests every night for a week and provided evening meals, hospitality and overnight shelter in the church's Fellowship Hall.

In the summer of 2009, leaders from many religious and community groups gathered to explore what, if anything, could be done for homeless persons during the coldest winter months. The community had a Salvation Army and a Rescue Mission that were doing a superb job sheltering persons from the elements and providing them hope to continue. But demand was increasingly outstripping supply. More persons were seeking shelter than there was shelter available.
