Martha is a family physician at Ekwendini Hospital, a ministry of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian’s Synod of Livingstonia. She cares for patients, supervises junior clinicians and trains staff and interns. She serves as a site coordinator for the Malawi College of Medicine and as a senior adjunct lecturer for Mzuzu University. “I believe God hears the cry of the poor, and we should use our skills to care for the poor,” Martha says. Poverty, she emphasizes, should not cause a woman to die during childbirth, prevent a child from growing into adulthood, or keep a patient with a treatable condition like HIV from getting lifesaving treatment.
