Pope John Paul II started celebrating a more ecumenical and scriptural version of the Way of the Cross in 1991, from which this was adapted. As you’ve probably noted, the readings follow several different translations, but none exclusively, leading me to believe it is probably a contemporary translation from the Greek, probably commissioned by the Vatican’s scholars for this service.
