A brief history of REYWT and its relationships

Like all good ideas, Racial Ethnic Young Women Together (REYWT) began with a conversation. And another. And another. Conversations among racial ethnic young women who had participated in the National Network of Presbyterian College Women (NNPCW). Conversations among Presbyterian Women. Conversations within Women's Ministries.

The conversations had one thread in common: young women of color need a space to organize around their faith and personal concerns, particularly as they relate to race and gender justice. Young women of color need to be able to set their own agenda, guided by the Holy Spirit. Young women of color need to cultivate a strong sense of identity in order to relate more effectively to the broader church.

And so a few key staff people and a few key racial ethnic young women put our heads together, solicited some seed money, hired an intern, gathered a core group of racial ethnic young women, and stepped back to see what they would come up with. It began as a "Racial Ethnic Young Women's Initiative." Within a year and a half, that core group has developed a strong identity, a sense of purpose and a commitment to providing a safe place for racial ethnic young women to explore how their Christian faith informs the issues they face on a regular basis.

Part of claiming an identity has included claiming a name. No longer content to be an "initiative," the core group chose "Racial Ethnic Young Women Together" as an official title for an emerging network. If you work hard, you can force the acronym REYWT to sound like "Root," reflecting the group's desire to "get rooted" in their identity as racial ethnic young women of faith.

The future possibilities for REYWT lie directly in the hands of the young women involved in the network. The sky is the limit! What do you need? What do you have to offer? How is God leading you to partner in transforming church and society? Together, we can move ahead with a beautiful vision ...
