In Jesus' name we are loved and we are forgiven

Submitted by the Rev. Kennedy McGowan, First Church in Hollywood, Florida

We have moved the font into a central place at the front on the floor of the sanctuary. In this way as people come for communion, they can place their hands in the water and be reminded of their baptism.

Each week after what we call a prayer for forgiveness and about 90 seconds of silence, I lead the assurance of forgiveness from the font. Taking a glass pitcher of water, I pour it into the font as I talk about how this water reminds us that nothing can separate us from God's love and that “In Jesus' name we are loved and we are forgiven.” Then folks turn to folks around them and say those same words to each other, and somewhat half-humorously, we invite people to respond, “Yes I am!” Then we say it together as a congregation and sing a version of the Gloria Patri in celebration of God's forgiveness and love in Christ. It has become a very powerful liturgical rite in our community, and every Sunday, you can literally feel the joy in the room at being once again assured of the grace of God.

Whenever people join our community, they always go through a renewal of baptism experience. We find it to be a powerful way to welcome people into the life of our church family.

Tell us your story so that we might share it with other congregations who could benefit from your experience.
