Connectional Partnerships for Development |

Self-Development of People works with middle governing bodies in two major ways. First, before funding domestic projects, the National Committee involves the synod or presbytery of the proposed project in its evaluation. Secondly we distribute a percentage of its funds to synod and presbytery Self-Development of People Committees, to fund projects locally themselves. Some projects, like the Human Opportunity Project in Baltimore, have both kinds of partnership. This project was an outgrowth of a group of low-income families which had built homes for scores of its members. Recognizing that some structures within communities, families and individuals reinforced the cycle of poverty, even with external obstacles removed, they set out to break that cycle by empowerment at each of these levels. The National Committee for Self-Development of People and the Baltimore Presbytery committee both decided to fund the project, and it is now under way. |
