The Jefferson Haven Tenant Organization is a self-development and leadership program for residents of public housing in Hibbing, Minnesota. These residents either have a disability and qualify for Social Security insurance or are emancipated youth, many of whom have transitioned from foster care to living on their own. Hibbing, a rural community in northeastern Minnesota, lacks many of the formal social support systems that are available in urban communities. The members of the organization recognized that for true independence, they needed not only employment but also education, training, and leadership skills, and they sought SDOP’s assistance with their endeavor. They are learning to advocate for themselves and their community. Their goals also include learning how to resolve conflict, to manage time and money and to understand and utilize the resources that are available to them.

With SDOP funds, the members of the Jefferson Haven Tenant Organization have initiated skill and development programs that will allow participants to learn and grow at their own rate. In the process they are learning the importance of supporting each other in their journey toward greater self-sufficiency. By taking an active role in improving their lives and supporting each other in their efforts, these residents are empowering themselves to become a true community of kinship and acceptance.
