Domestic violence is a leading cause of injury in the Cottage Grove community. In addition to their personal development and overcoming the effects of spousal/mate abuse, the women of the Women’s Information Network are continuing with their personal recovery and advocacy work through the purchase of the Transformation House (project funded by the Self-Development of People in 2007). The house is a safe place for women and children.

The residents have decided to grow a vegetable garden. The vegetables are being used for food and for a vegetable stand to make extra money. “Our garden provides a chance for all members to work together creatively – especially children.” says Christa Loveland, Director of WINS

Other activities to generate income for the house include a “Rummage and Bake Sale” and a Tea Shop. The shop provides an excellent vehicle for community education and job training.

WINS also runs a thrift store named “Once Again” where women from the Transformation House volunteer. Back in March a run away car damaged the store. The store had to be demolished and they had to look for a new place. “We were blessed with a wonderful new location in downtown Cottage Grove. We think the new location in town will be more convenient for volunteers and customers. Our volunteer base is already growing fast!” says Christa.

The new store is charming after WINS invested many hours painting and setting up new displays for the store areas.
