The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (UDTS) is
an ecumenical seminary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Its purpose is to
advance the mission and ministry of the church of Jesus Christ by preparing women
and men for faithful, compassionate and effective pastoral and lay ministry in
congregations. The seminary seeks to live as an academy of the church and a community
of Christians to the glory of the one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
History and Location
UDTS is located in Dubuque, Iowa, a comfortable, family-oriented
community on the Mississippi River.
Founded in 1852 as an outreach to German settlers pouring
into the Midwest, the then-named Van Vliet Seminary provided practical theological
instruction to prepare pastors and evangelists. The institution eventually grew
to include an undergraduate college and, in 1920, changed its name to the University
of Dubuque.
The picturesque campus, featured in the movie Field of
Dreams, includes traditional red brick classroom buildings, a popular athletic
complex and a state-of-the-art technology center. Construction of a new library
and new seminary housing began in1999. Four colleges and two seminaries in the
city offer a rich variety of educational and cultural opportunities. Children
of seminarians can walk to excellent neighborhood schools and play in the many
beautiful parks in Dubuque.
What programs does Dubuque offer?
UDTS is a warm, close-knit community offering Master of Divinity,
Master of Arts and Doctor of Ministry degrees. The curriculum encourages disciplined,
prayerful reflection on the scriptures, tradition, and ministerial practices
of the church. Travel seminars to such places as Israel, Europe, Los Angeles
and the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho allow students to appreciate the diversity
of the Christian church.
Theological education at UDTS is grounded in the tradition
of the church and enlivened by a passion for the gospel. The extensive pastoral
experience of the faculty and staff informs their teaching, advising and scholarship.
UDTS endeavors, as a community of students and teachers, to serve and enjoy the
Lord our God. |
