  Reporting Misconduct

Special note: In the United States most states require allegations of abuse against a minor to be reported immediately to state authorities. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) policy encourages immediate reporting to the civil authorities all allegations of abuse against a minor regardless of personal confidentiality issues. Each state has a different mandatory reporting process. PC(USA) regional offices (presbyteries) will have the up-to-date information regarding the process in that area.

Procedures

PC(USA) reporting procedures vary according the relationship of the alleged abuser to the church:

Congregational members or elders are subject to discipline through the session. Allegations of abuse against a congregational member or elder must be reported to the clerk of session or pastor.

Congregational employees and/or volunteers are subject to discipline through the session of the congregation. Allegations of abuse against a congregational employee or volunteer must be reported to the clerk of session or pastor. Use the congregational directory for congregational contact information.

Ministers are members of the regional governing body (the presbytery) and are subject to its discipline. Allegations of abuse against a minister should be reported to the presbytery through its stated clerk.

Employees of regional governing bodies (presbyteries and synods) are subject to discipline through the personnel committee of that entity. To report the misconduct of non-ministerial employees of the presbyteries or synods, contact the executive or the stated clerk of that body. [See presbytery and synod list]

Employees of General Assembly entities, such as national staff and mission personnel, are subject to the sexual misconduct policies of the General Assembly and the employee handbook of the respective entity.
