Pilgrimage and Place
Pilgrimage involves movement. We usually associate pilgrimage with walking,
but even if our feet stay planted, pilgrimage can happen interiorly. Pilgrimage
is universally understood as a spiritual journey, though it is also widely understood
that the soul can make a journey while the body remains in one place. This image
is most vividly captured in John Bunyan’s classic allegory, Pilgrim’s
Progress (1678). Allegory notwithstanding, pilgrimage is usually made on foot.
Some would say that the physical movement is the external evidence of an internal
reality.
