Academy for Missional Preaching course of study
During your first academy meeting in 2009, you will
- explore what it means to be missional
- examine the various contexts of preaching, situating all preaching and its contexts within the context of the Sovereignty (Kingdom) of God
- strategize about preaching the gospel through the Bible in your context
- begin discerning a long-term plan for your church’s missional preaching
- preach and offer preaching feedback in a supportive, but challenging, environment
- start and end each day in worship
- hear good missional preaching
- have free time
for reflection and recreation in beautiful natural surroundings
- enjoy the ministry of hospitality because we know how difficult the work of being a good pastor is
During your intervening year you will
- do a thick description of your preaching contexts — three representative parishioners’ lives; your congregational life; your community’s ethos. (Due Nov. 1. This can be submitted orally through electronic means. Questions to aid you will be provided.)
- use your thick description to devise a missional preaching plan. This plan should take into account what you've discerned about where your church is, as well as the next steps they need to take in order to move deeper into the divine life/basileia/missio Dei. (Due Nov. 1)
- participate in online preaching feedback. Comment on the preaching of the peers in your academy online.
- preach a sermon with one of the scriptures relating to the missional purpose of church that will be assigned. A variety of folks will contribute their observations on the set texts (a virtual roundtable preaching!). With what they have to say, as well as with scholarly commentaries, and your unique knowledge of your preaching situation, preach a sermon during a regular Sunday morning worship service and audio/video tape it to submit it to online critique. In addition to the critique of your peers, your congregation (and any friends they’d like to invite) and other totally random folks will also be providing critique so you can see how various people react to your preaching (and so your own congregants can remain completely anonymous in the crowd). This group will be moderated so as not to subject preachers to destructive comments.
- submit another sermon for homiletic coaching (optional).
During your second academy meeting in 2010 you will
- explore how worship and the rest of the church’s ministry serves or starves missional preaching.
- have more sharing from participants than in Year 1.
- report on and, if necessary, modify our missional preaching plans and our initial observations.
- preach another missional sermon.
- strategize about ways to take what you've learned back to your presbytery
By January 1, 2011, you will
- submit a final report on the differences your missional preaching plan is making in your context.
- receive certification upon completion of the Academy’s course of studies.
