Biblical Authority for the Life of the
Church: Theology and Worship Church Issues Series, No. 3
The Office of Theology and Worship is pleased to make available
an important paper from the United Reformed Church in the United
Kingdom, "The Nature of Biblical Authority for the Life
of the Church." The paper grows out of the URC's own struggles
with sexuality issues and the debates over the Bible that are
part of those struggles. The United Reformed Church has not
settled these matters for itself, nor will its paper settle
matters for Presbyterians in the United States. Yet our church
may benefit from the way the United Reformed Church has dealt
with the matter as well as from some specific perspectives that
it offers. PDS #70-420-00-009;

Using the Bible
This guided study of Presbyterian statements on biblical authority
and interpretation will enable groups to use guidelines for
interpreting the Bible when dealing with difficult or controversial
issues. Using the Bible deals with "Marriage and Divorce"
and "War and Peace." Insights and skills developed
in these studies will be useful in dealing with other difficult
issues such as human sexuality. PDS #277-92-101;

Theology
The Great Ends of the Church: Preservation of the Truth by the
Rev. Joe Small
In the second book of the Great Ends of the Church Series,
Preservation of the Truth, Rev. Joseph Small explains that truth is not a proposition,
an objective fact existing outside human experience, but in a fact a person,
Jesus Christ, who is God with us and for us. PDS #095819 . $14.95.
Conversations with the Confessions by Joseph D. Small
Fourteen Presbyterian scholars enter into conversations with the confessions
of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and examine the theological themes that make
the confessions such foundational commitments of faith. This collection of essays
provides readers with a clear understanding of the confessions from different
periods of the church's life. Contributors include John P. Burgess, Margit Ernst-Habib,
Willie James Jennings, Clifton Kirkpatrick, Thomas G. Long, Martha Moore-Keish,
Kevin Park, Cynthia L. Rigby, Joseph D. Small, Laura Smit, Sheldon W. Sorge,
John L. Thompson, Leanne Van Dyk, and Charles A. Wiley. Joseph D. Small is Associate
Director of the Office of Theology and Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
He is the editor of Fire and Wind: The Holy Spirit in the Church Today, published
by Geneva Press. PDS# 0664502482 . $24.95.
Bearing the Marks of the
Church: Reforming Ministry's Occasional Paper Series No. 1, by Charles Wiley,
Kevin Park and Darrell L. Guder
Who or what is the church? By what stars shall we navigate as we seek to be the
church here and now? The three essays gathered in Bearing the Marks of the Church
use the Nicene marks of the church — one, holy, catholic, apostolic — as
navigation points as we seek to be the church now and into the future. PDS #70424-06-001.

Theology in the Life of the Congregation:
Theology and Worship Occasional Paper #17, Edward Farley
The Office of Theology and Worship is pleased to present the opening essay in
Practicing Gospel, "Theology in the Life of the Congregation," as Theology
and Worship Occasional Paper No. 17. The essay stands by itself as a valuable
contribution to the self-understanding of the church and its ministers. Pastors
and seminarians will benefit from its analysis and its suggestive description
of "a theology of ministry and ministry as theology." The essay also
serves as an introduction to the whole collection, and may inspire some to read
further, exploring such issues as "Preaching the Bible and Preaching the
Gospel," and "The Tragic Dilemma of Church Education." The Office
of Theology and Worship is grateful to Westminster John Knox Press for permission
to publish the present essay, and hopes that readers will find their way to all
the essays in Practicing Gospel. PDS #70420-04-004 $3.00
Are Children Human: Theology and Worship
Occasional Paper No. 12, Barbara Pitkin.
"Are Children Human?" brings together historical,
theological, and pastoral issues in order to help the church
explore the quality of its relationship with its children. "Are
Children Human?" may seem to have an obvious answer, but
the way we answer will affect the ways we shape church life.
"Let the little children come to me," said Jesus,
"do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the
kingdom of God belongs" (Mark 10:14). Who are these children?
Barbara Pitkin helps to answer the question with grace and faithfulness. PDS# 70-420-00-008

Social Witness in Generous Orthodoxy: Theology
and Worship, Occasional Paper No. 14, George Hunsinger.
George Hunsinger asserts that the polarity of "progressive
politics and traditional faith" is not true to the gospel
and not true to the church's own tradition. More directly, Hunsinger
demonstrates the the Presbyterian Church's new "Study Catechism"
embodies theology and social witness together in fidelity to
the gospel. Social Witness in Generous Orthodoxy - Theology
and Worship Occasional Paper No. 14 - is a significant contribution
to the church's ongoing discussion of its faith and mission.
It is also a demonstration of the capacity of the church's new
catechisms to shape the conversation and to form the church
and its members in Christian discipleship that is deeply rooted
in the gospel and that bears fruit in active engagements for
justice and peace in the world. PDS #70-420-01-004

Growing Up Theologically: Theology
and Worship Occasional Paper No. 15, Leanne Van Dyk.
In Theology and Worship Occasional Paper No. 15, Leanne Van
Dyk develops a lively metaphor for thinking theologically. Growing
Up Theologically spins out the process of organic growth as
an imaginative way of understanding ourselves as people who
can and do reflect on Christian faith and life, and who can
mature in our theological thinking. PDS #70-420-01-010 $3.00
each - $2.00 each for 10 or more to same address.
The Crucified One is Lord: Confessing the
Uniqueness of Christ in a Pluralist Society - Theology and Worship
Church Issues Series, No. 4
How shall Christians confess their faith in the midst of people
whose beliefs are different? What is the shape of the faith
that Christians confess? What should be the church's stance
toward other faith traditions? The Office of Theology and Worship
wishes to contribute to the church's consideration of the issue
by making available to Presbyterians a superb theological paper
from the Commission on Theology of the Reformed Church in America.

Hope in the Lord Jesus Christ
The 213th General Assembly (2001) requested the Office of Theology

Included in this version of the statement is a 4-session study
guide of the statement, including reflection on scriptural and
confessional quotations. PDS #70-420-02-004.

Three theological statements approved by General Assemblies
are included in one volume. The Confessional Nature of the Church
(1986) examines the purpose of confessions and their place in
the church; Historic Principles, Conscience, and Church Government
(1983) helps to clarify the relationship between theology and
polity and the relationship between doctrine and conscience;
Is Christ Divided? (1988) explores theological diversity and
the unity of the church.
PDS #70-420-99-007;

Is Christ Divided?
Presbyterians do not always agree with one another on important
theological issues. We sometimes set ourselves in theological
"camps" - conservatives, liberationists, liberals,
feminists, evangelicals - and we often have different ways of
talking about crucial theological themes - salvation, mission,
Christology. In the midst of our diversity, how are we united?
How shall we, as a community of faith, deal with our diversity?
"Is Christ Divided?" wrestles with hard realities
and points the way toward responsible diversity within faithful
unity. PDS #OGA88-108;

The French Confession of 1559
At a time when the Presbyterian Church (USA) must learn to live
with the reality of its 'cultural disestablishment,' the French
Confession is a helpful conversation partner. It is more than
a mere historical curiosity, for although the French Confession
is a product of 16th century Europe, it is neither out of date
nor 'eurocentrist.' PDS #70-420-98-004,

Growing In The Life of Christian Faith
There is a yearning among many members of the Presbyterian
Church for a life of faith that is newer, fresher, and more vibrant.
"Growing in the Life of Christian Faith" is a resource
that examines both the contemporary desire for a more lively
life of faith and the way in which that desire might be appropriately
be fulfilled. The booklet suggests that our hope lies in the
recovery of the Reformed tradition's commitment to disciplined
life in community and points the way toward such a recovery.

C. Bower
Published during the 10th anniversary of the Book of Common
Worship (1993), The Companion to the Book of Common Worship
is a practical guide, answering questions such as "How
do I use the Book of Common Worship to its fullest advantage?"
and "How can the Book of Common Worship form a congregation

presents a variety of possibilities for enacting services in
the Book of Common Worship and, thereby, stimulates the imagination
of worship planners and leaders in accomplishing their various
tasks. In particular, The Companion provides background information
regarding the services, comments on the rubrics accompanying
texts, and suggests some ways to use the texts and, occasionally,
abridge or augment them for particular situations. Sections
in The Companion parallel those in the Book of Common Worship
and include Service for the Lord's Day, Liturgical Year, Baptism,
Daily Prayer, Marriage, and Music, among others. This book also
contains a study guide to the Book of Common Worship. The Companion

Belonging to God—Catechism Resources for Worship.
Incorporating the Catechism into the worship service invites
learning that is not mere memorization but a participation and
a place within the community—a place and a way of saying
why we are there and who it is that we gather to worship. This
liturgical resource is a rich gift to pastors, educators, and
parents, but most importantly it's a gift to our children.
—Freda A. Gardner, from the Foreword.
This exciting new resource for Presbyterian pastors, worship
leaders, and educators demonstrates how to incorporate the new
Belonging to God catechism into worship services-allowing for
the full inclusion of children. The book provides prayers, calls
to worship, baptismal resources, confirmation resources, graduation
rites, and more, all based on the new children's catechism.
In addition, it includes suggestions for using the catechism
in sermons-for children specifically and for the entire congregation-and
offers bulletin suggestions, an annotated bibliography, and
a comprehensive listing of other catechism resources. Chapters

The Life of the Church
The Church and Its Unity
Barbara Wheeler and P. Mark Achtemeier
Two significant perspectives on the unity of the church, offered
by persons who have different views on some of the issues currently
dividing the church. Both essays go beyond the preservation
of institutional or sentimental ties to genuinely theological
understandings of the unity of the church.

Identity — Polity — Praxis:
Ecclesiology and the Presbytery: Reforming Ministry's Occasional Paper Series
No. 2, by Paul K. Hooker
Presbyteries are one
of the places in our system where the dying of old patterns of church life and
the birth of new patterns come together most intensely. It can be difficult to
see the opportunities such a moment brings: the challenges, difficulties and
losses press in so closely. And yet there are presbyteries all across the PC(USA)
imagining, seeking the opportunities, gathering for new possibilities. Paul Hooker’s
essay, "Identity — Polity — Praxis" is a contribution
to this ferment. Hooker calls us to hear and respond to the questions we face
in this time of intense transition — “who are we called to be?”, “what
are we called to do?”, “how are we called to do it?” Envisioning
presbyteries as embodiments of life together, thinking through how they can become
such places — that’s a conversation that is energizing. "Identity
— Polity — Praxis"
is an invitation to continue (or to join) that conversation. PDS #211650701.

Mission from the Margins: Theology and Worship
Occasional Paper #18, Philip Wickeri
Philip Wickeri believes that we are living in a time of fundamental change in
the shape and structure of world Christianity. This change creates a crisis that
may be described in terms of the churches' relationship to globalization, and
its response to religious and cultural pluralism. Prof. Wickeri sets forth an
understanding of "mission from the margins," suggesting that, throughout
the history of the Christian churches, the cutting edge for mission has come
from movements emerging outside established Christian centers. In today's context,
these "marginal" movements include the African initiated churches,
Pentecostals all over the world, and the rural churches of China. PDS# 70420-04-009 $3.00
Ordinary and Extraordinary Discipline — Theology
and Worship Church Issues Series No. 6, Charles Wiley
The life of the PC(USA) is now consumed with matters of church
discipline. What is "rightly ministered" church discipline?
What does church discipline shaped by God’s Word look
like? What is the role of the church’s discipline in
inhibiting vice and nourishing virtue? In Ordinary and Extraordinary Discipline,
Charles Wiley explores the nature of mutual accountability in the Christian community.

Bearing With One Another — The Pastoral
Task in Times of Struggle — Theology and Worship Church
Issues Series No. 5, Sheldon Sorge
In times of deep, persisting internal struggle, the church is
tempted to seek facile, pragmatic resolutions, often resulting
in the scandal of schism. All too easily, the core theological
principles that shape our life together are obscured in the
press for quick relief. In Scripture, the church is understood
as being indivisibly one body; yet even though it already is
one body, it is also called to become one - one in mind and
one in witness under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit.
It always lives under the paradox that it must become what it
already is. This paper mines the deep treasures of biblical
teaching and Reformed wisdom on unity in the visible church,
particularly identifying the tradition's council for faithful
pastoral strategy in times of dispute and decay. Responsible
leadership demands that we address ecclesial stress points with
theological integrity; this study points the way toward such
an engagement with the church's struggles in our own time and
place. PDS #70-420-02-001

The Shape of Pastoral Ministry: Theology
and Worship Occasional paper No. 13 Joseph A. Sittler and Richard
R. Osmer
The Shape of Pastoral Ministry reprints two significant essays
that are no longer readily available. "The Maceration of
the Minister" by the late Lutheran theologian Joseph Sittler,
is an incisive, sympathetic analysis of the plight of ministers.
"The Teaching Authority of the Minister in the Reformed
Tradition: A Contemporary Proposal" by Richard R. Osmer,
the Thomas W. Synnott Professor of Christian Education at Princeton
Theological Seminary, presents a creative understanding of the
office we Presbyterians used to call "teaching elder."
The Office of Theology and Worship believes that The Shape of
Pastoral Ministry is a useful resource for pastors, sessions,
and presbyteries. We hope that it will be used by groups of
ministers and elders as a means to order discussion of the perils
and possibilities of ministry. PDS #70-420-00-013

Ecumenism and Interfaith
Calvin, Ecumenism, and Justice: Theology and Worship Occasional
Paper No. 19, by Jane Dempsey Douglass and Margit Ernst-Habib
Calvin’s legacy is mixed. He is admired for the clarity of his thought
but maligned for his doctrine of predestination. He is respected for his creative
reform of the church but distrusted as the “dictator of Geneva.” He
is esteemed for his faithful and imaginative interpretation of Scripture but
criticized for his harsh censure of opponents. And, of course, there is always
the Servetus affair. Recent biographies have moderated the severe judgments leveled
against Calvin, and a revival of interest in his theology has renewed appreciation
for his continuing significance. The Office of Theology and Worship is pleased
to make available two new assessments of Calvin’s relevance to the contemporary
church. The vitality of the Reformed tradition is evident in essays by Jane Dempsey
Douglass and Margit Ernst-Habib. PDS #7042006007.
$3.00 each ($2.00 each if 10 or more to the same address).
Christians and Jews–People
of God: Theology and Worship Church Issues Series No. 7
The Office of Theology and Worship
is pleased to provide Christians and Jews–People of God as one part
of our response to the General Assembly’s action to “reexamine and strengthen
the relationship between Christians and Jews and the implications of this relationship
for our evangelism and new church development in the continuing response to the
211th General Assembly (1999) mandate to guide the church in ‘bearing witness
to Jesus Christ in a pluralistic age.’” Like other publications
in the Theology and Worship Church Issues Series, Christians
and Jews–People
of God is intended to make available resources that will help Presbyterians think
through vital issues of faith and faithfulness. Some of the material comes from
our own church, while other contributions come from beyond the PC(USA). All are
useful to Presbyterians in congregations and presbyteries and may be suitable
for Christian-Jewish dialogue. PDS #70420-05-004 $3.00
each - $2.00 each for 10 or more to same address.

Spirit's Gifts - God's Reign: Theology
and Worship Occasional Paper No. 11, Yohan Hyun & Frank
Macchia
Presbyterian and Pentecostal both begin with the letter P, but
many believe that is where the similarity ends. Spirit's Gifts
- God's Reign provides a glimpse of international ecumenical
dialogue between Pentecostals and Reformed Christians. Two preparatory
papers for the 1999 Seoul meeting of the Pentecostal-Reformed
Dialogue laid the groundwork for a week of intense theological
discussion. The Office of Theology and Worship publishes them
for the church in the hope that they may provide a foundation
for conversation within Presbyterian congregations and presbyteries,
and between local groups of Presbyterians and Pentecostals.

A Common Calling: The Witness of Our Reformation
Churches In North America Today
The Report of the Lutheran-Reformed Committee for Theological
Conversations - the report explores whether these churches (ELCA,
PC(USA), RCA, UCC) "agree concerning the teaching of the
Gospel and the administration of the sacraments," that
is, whether this agreement is sufficient for "full communion."
While disagreements continue to shape us, the report concludes
they "should not stand in the way of achieving full communion."

The Christian Life - A Geography of God
- Michael L. Lindvall
The life of the Christian may be described as a journey. With
an ease of style, pastor and author Michael Lindvall divides
the journey into three parts: "Leaving for Home,"
"The Way," and "Life on the Road." The first
part struggles with the question, "Why go anywhere at all,
spiritually speaking?" The second part names the road--the
way found in the God the Christian tradition has long understood
in the ancient map of God called the Trinity, and describes
how the "Stranger Come to Town," becomes "knowable."
The last and largest part describes life on the road as other
pilgrims have known it. In this section are mile?markers and
road signs, warnings of perilous curves, refreshment for the
weary, and notice of lovely things to be seen along the way
by watchful eyes. Published by Geneva Press. Item #501427.

of salvation for how we as a Christian community live out our
faith in Jesus Christ. Published by Geneva Press. Item #501621
