Church history on fast-forward
Church History 101: An Introduction for Presbyterians

By William M. Ramsey (Geneva Press, 2005; 144 pages; $14.95, paper)

Two thousand years of church history in less than 150 pages! It seems impossible, but William M. Ramsey manages to pull it off. Well, sort of.

  Book Cover: Church History 101

As the title indicates, this is only a 101 course. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than an "introduction." In nine short chapters, Ramsey manages to touch on most of the important eras and individuals who left their marks on the church and the world, from the first century to the present day.

Search the pages and you will find Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Jonathan Edwards and a host of others whose ministries left indelible imprints on the life of the church. And in spite of the book's brevity, the author has included a number of interesting tidbits not usually found in other, more complete histories: You didn't know, did you, that Santa Claus was a delegate to the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325? Yes — St. Nicholas himself was involved in the theological battle that determined that the church would be Trinitarian in nature.

Or how about this? In the 10th century, a prostitute named Marozia wielded so much power that she was able to determine who the next pope would be. And I'll bet you didn't know what Rembrandt was a devout Protestant.

Although the book is subtitled, "An Introduction for Presbyterians," only Chapter 9 is devoted specifically to the Presbyterian Church and Presbyterians; so this book is an invaluable resource for Christians of all denominations. While designed for individual reading, it's also suitable for use by adult study groups and even older teen-age classes, making it a useful addition to any personal or church library.

  New! Worlds apart

Clash of Ideologies: The Making of the Christian and Islam Worlds

By David J. Jonsson (Xulon Press, 2005; 612 pages, $29.99, paper)

Book cover: The Clash of Ideologies

History repeats itself. Yet everyone has "historical amnesia" when it comes to connecting present events with past lessons. That is Jonsson's premise in a timely book about Christianity and Islam: two cultures in the same world that are worlds apart.

Against the backdrop of ancient history, Jonsson uses the "Letters to the Seven Churches" from the book of Revelation (chapters 1-3) to portray the beginnings of the "clash." He examines how each church ignored Biblical warnings about specific sins and was destroyed as a result. Calling this apocalypse the "Islamization" of Christianity, Jonsson connects the dots to the Christian church of today and its apathy, pluralism, and moral decay.

Jonsson says the ideological war between Islam and Christianity is much bigger than the "hot war" in Iraq — and the stakes are far higher: It is, he contends, a "war for souls."

In the course of his career, Jonsson worked in more than 30 Islamic countries, dealing with Muslims from students to kings, and he has studied the Bible and the Qur'an extensively. He offers a Christian perspective on today's events. This is a challenging and complex book, meticulously researched, with a compelling message for every thoughtful Christian: "Wake up, strengthen what remains and is about to die .... " (Rev. 3:2).
